Mayer Brown boosts Asian funds practice

The law firm has expanded its Asian Corporate and Securities practice with three new hires in Hong Kong.

International law firm, Mayer Brown, has announced three new additions to its Hong Kong based Asian Corporate and Securities practice, effective from November 01.

Paul Moloney, Helen Wang and Gigi Ma join as lead investment funds partner, counsel and associate, respectively. The company announcement details that the three join from another Hong Kong based international law firm, which, according to Moloney’s LinkedIn profile, is Eversheds Sutherland.

Mark Uhrynuk, a partner at Mayer Brown explained to FinanceAsia that continuing growth within the global private investment funds team is a central strategic initiative for the firm, “Paul and his team will be working closely with colleagues in Asia, the United States and Europe to further develop and build our investment funds practice in Asia as an important component of our global strategic plan."

The new hires bring to the firm extensive experience in fundraising, from structural fund formation and regulatory compliance issues, liaison with asset managers, issuers and limited partners, to the licensing particulars of key global fund jurisdictions.

The note highlights experience in activity relating to the Cayman Islands, China, Hong Kong, Ireland and Singapore, as well as the “rapidly evolving area of digital assets”.  Moloney confirmed with FA that an important subset of his regulatory and advisory practice relates to this developing arena.

The Mayer Brown team confirmed that the new recruits have worked across a multitude of strategies including cryptocurrency, derivatives and options, healthcare, hedge funds, precious metals and commodities, private credit and real estate, amongst others.

Discussing the outlook of the fundraising environment over the next 12 months, Moloney shared with FA, "I would expect the fundraising environment to remain positive, driven by a number of factors such as investors’ seeking exposure to digital assets, demand for a range of new ESG products and the continuing volatility in the markets.”
