Citi names head of Equity Capital Markets for Australasia

Robert Jahrling has been promoted from co-head of Equity Capital Markets (ECM) in Australia and New Zealand to run the whole team.

US-headquartered banking group, Citi, has announced the promotion of Robert Jahrling to sole head of its ECM function in Australia and New Zealand, effective June 29.

In his new capacity, Jahrling will continue to provide strategic advice to Citi’s clients, while building and maintaining relationships with both domestic and global institutional investors, a Citi spokesperson told FinanceAsia.

Jahrling joined Citi in 2010 as head of Equity Syndicate. He was appointed co-head of ECM for Australia and New Zealand in 2021 and has been involved in a number of recent key strategic equity deals, including Air New Zealand’s NZ$1.2 billion ($745 million) equity raise in May 2022; copper miner, Sandfire Resources’ A$1.25 billion ($860 million) equity raise in September 2021; and IGO’s A$800 million equity raise in December 2020.

He also led the establishment of Citi Australia’s block trade business.

Jahrling’s promotion follows the departure of previous co-head, Hamish Whitehead, who according to media reports has joined Credit Suisse as head of ECM for Australia.

The spokesperson declined to comment on why the bank amalgamated Jahrling and Whitehead’s shared function into a sole role – and similarly declined to share updates on further plans for expansion of Citi’s ECM team.

Sydney-based Jahrling will report to Alex Cartel, head of Citi’s Banking, Capital Markets and Advisory function in Australia and New Zealand, as well as Douglas Adams and James Fleming, co-heads of Citi’s ECM business.

The latest appointment also follows Citi’s reshuffling of leadership positions in Asia, which the bank said aims to enhance support throughout the region.
